In collaboration with C.F. Møller Design, Wehlers has designed and developed R.U.M. a design chair made of trash.
R.U.M. is short for ReUsedMaterials and R.U.M. is a sustainable chair with a plastic seat and back made of recycled post-use plastic waste from the maritime industry, such as fishing nets, trawls, ropes and boxes. Wehlers taps into yet another problem the World faces today, plastic waste from electronics and electrical equipment. Waste from electrical and electronic equipment (widely known as WEEE or e-waste) generated in the EU is increasing rapidly and is now one of the fastest growing waste streams.
R.U.M.’s seat and back comes in two colors, decided by the waste stream: Fishing nets makes the chair dark green and E-waste makes it black.
The design of the stacking chair is rooted in circular principles, with its seat, back and pipe shoe all fashioned from granulated recycled material mounted on a steel frame. The design can be repaired, reused and recycled. Designed for disassembly.
The Wehlers R.U.M. chair is proof that by designing on the principles of circular design it is possible to lower emissions and reduce the use of virgin materials significantly - all without compromising on neither aesthetics, price nor quality – changing the furniture industry for good.
• For every R.U.M. chair sold we use close to 2 Kgs of plastic waste.
• R.U.M. reduces Co2 emissions by 82,5% during production process
• This results in 3283 g Co2 reduction for every R.U.M. chair
Wehlers is a sustainable design furniture brand. The furniture we design is all made with recycled and sustainable sourced materials. We work with Circular Economy and we insist that our furniture is repaired, reused and recycled during and after “end of life cycle. Wehlers has designed an intelligent eco-system, take-back system, and thereby helps its designers, suppliers & customers become more sustainable.
Wehlers believe in the circular principles. We are convinced that well-designed, sustainable products are the starting point for a sustainable interior. Wehlers closes material loops and takes its responsibility when it comes to utilizing materials.
Wehlers furniture collection is designed so they can be reused at any point in the future. We design with the end in mind. Designed for disassembly.
All of our furniture has a high content of reused materials. If we need new materials for a product, we use as many renewable and local materials as we can find.
Today’s linear “take, make, dispose” model relies on large quantities of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy, and it is a model that has reached its physical limits. We insist that our furniture is not only made of recycled and sustainable materials, but also repaired, reused and recycled during and after ‘end-of-life-cycle’.
Recycling is a great place to start but a bad place to stop.
