Bazaar A chair straight from the Orient Bazaar. Previously fallen into disuse, 360 cm of genuine vintage oriental rug now extends from the ground to form a seat and backrest before snaking its way back down to the ground. Thanks to its sculpted contours, the chair makes for an eye-catching piece. It has been constructed using a simple frame which is barely visible and keeps its shape through cable tension, whilst the rug remains textile in nature, with soft material characteristics. The materials used include the base frame, which stays largely out of view, an invisible foam base for the seat and the rug itself, which is on display to form the usable surface. This rug was handmade in Iran around 30 years ago in an elaborate, opulent process. Rugs of this quality are a symbol of great craftsmanship, but are no longer sought after as they once were. This rug was going spare during a household clear-out and was due to be thrown away. My interest and approach to design isn’t about creating something completely from scratch, but rather about taking something old and pre-owned and crafting it into something new. The actual material has been opulently crafted using high-quality constituents in accordance with ancient craftsmanship tradition. The finished chair has been made entirely from used materials, foregoing any additional, elaborate processes, resulting in an excellent carbon footprint. Not only is this chair comfortable, but it is also photogenic, standing out from the crowd with its distinctive form which features a striking yet classic pattern. This is out of the ordinary in today’s day and age, where most chairs tend to be plain, inconspicuous and supremely practical, failing to spark any kind of emotional response. As the title ‘Bazaar’ suggests, the chair is a feast for the eyes, just like the Orient’s markets, where anything is possible. Chair width: 45 cm / Total height: 82 cm / Seat height: 43 cm About me: I am a designer and artisan who values the importance of designing and realising things myself, without relying on other materials, craftsmen or the industry. On this account, the finished products aren’t overly sophisticated in terms of appearance, materials or craft, but the processes of conception, selection and realisation turn them into stand-out pieces. I love to reuse materials or objects which once served another purpose, as demonstrated by this piece of furniture, where a chair has been formed out of an old rug.
