Like its designer, this chair is passionate about materials, colour, texture and the contrasts between them. It forms a strong, but subtle wooden stage on which a wide variety of seats and backrests can be fitted, attached by straps in a straight-forward fashion. With its handmade wooden frame and traditional joinery, it is destined to be a true family member for years to come.
The chair features 25 different seats and backrests in cast acrylic and handmade plywood. When we mingle the seats and backrests, the chair can show up to 625 different combinations of colours and textures. The customer can choose the desired configuration or select multiple sets, allowing the chair to change colour over time, following the change of seasons, the vibe of tomorrow or the feeling of next year. The current collections of acrylic and plywood will be expanded in the future, featuring other materials and textures, assuring the chair stays an exploration of contrast for the years to come.
To show not only the chair, but also the hundreds of different combinations, the designer will change the seat and backrest of the chair several times a day during this event.
Chair 625 saw the light of day in the workshop of its designer Thomas Litière. Inspired by traditional joinery and the beauty of European hardwood, he designed the chair to be strong, simple and elegant. “As if it’s as much a chair as a chair can be” The geometry is strong, yet quiet, giving space to the woodgrain and details. As a whole, however, it only becomes a chair when meeting its complement: the contrasting seat and backrest.
Since the soul of each chair is found in its wooden frame, the designer insists on building every chair by hand. “While the design emerges from the mind, it should be constructed by hand; only then is every chair truly designed.” Using ancient joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints and dowel connections, the chair is given the strength and character of traditional woodcraft. The chairs are made from locally harvested hardwood that is selected by the designer based on the beauty of its grain. The wooden frame is available in six types of European hardwood: oak, beech, maple, pear, robinia, and elm. Combined with 18 colours of acrylic and 7 different plywoods, Chair 625 makes its debut.
Every chair is handmade on request and can be ordered directly from the designer. Customers can visit the showroom to get to know the available wood types, the different finishes and the broad collection of seats and backrests. In this exploration a unique chair is configured in a synergy between the customer
