Maniera is a Brussels-based gallery founded in 2014, which commissions architects and artists to develop limited edition furniture series.
On the occasion of the re-edition of a daybed / sofa bed designed by Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens, MANIERA presents an installation inspired by his open-plan living spaces. Lampens’ minimalist, bunker-like houses, often linked with the Brutalist movement, are almost exclusively built with concrete, wood and glass. In his domestic interiors, Lampens offsets concrete's harshness with the warmth of wood and an openness to nature. The architect’s idea of living was based on various features to form a complete open plan without pillars or even walls, and all the rooms were placed so they seemingly conjoined with each other. This style privileges community and equality within the living space while focusing on life together as a family unit as a way of returning to a more basic way of living.
Based on the interiors of the ‘Residence Relaxie’ apartment building designed by Juliaan Lampens (Oostduinkerke, 1969), the 5.7 x 5.7 metre square is divided into 4 by means of 4 thick ‘floating’ panels, an abstract translation of the original suspended sliding doors in the seaside apartments. The 4 semi-open volumes contain MANIERA furniture by OFFICE kgdvs (introducing the Corner Chair), Richard Venlet, Jonathan Muecke, Bijoy Jain / Studio Mumbai and aDVVT, as well as the daybeds by Lampens himself.

Etage Projects is a Copenhagen-based art and design gallery specializing in a cross-aesthetic method.
